UK construction saw signs of recovery in February after a slow few months, with commercial projects leading growth.
Overall growth in construction activity was subdued last month due to a continuation of January’s decrease in orders. But with the strong rise in commercial projects, the latest IHS Markit/CIPS Construction PMI noted a marginal rise in output overall.
Hinting at a possible improvement from 2018’s slow start, commercial construction recovered from its recent decline, and companies across the country enjoyed a solid rise in activity, expanding at the highest rate since May 2017.
Tim Moore, Associate Director at IHS Markit, said:
“The increase in work on commercial projects during February was one of the strongest seen over the past two years. Some construction firms noted that greater industrial demand, alongside structural changes in consumer spending habits, had contributed to new project opportunities.”
And with an increase in new orders, higher workloads and unexpected levels of demand fuelling commercial construction’s strength last month, the IHS report also noticed further increases in the number of jobs being created.
With a higher than expected demand for commercial work, many companies have been recruiting staff throughout February to keep up with current orders and prepare for new projects starting in the coming months.
