UK construction industry continues to grow

Published on 9th December 2016

Job creation in the construction industry rose in November as the sector continued its rebound from the weak performance seen in the third quarter of 2016, a report by the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) has revealed.

The Markit/CIPS UK Construction PMI study found that the number of construction jobs and level of sub-contractor usage increased as companies’ confidence grew on the back of healthy levels of near-term demand.

Business activity and incoming new work hit their highest levels since March to give an index score of 52.8 for November, with anything above 50 indicating growth in the sector.

Housebuilding remained the main driver of rising activity levels, but there was also a slight rebound in commercial activity following a five-month run of decline. The trend was underpinned by a solid upturn in new work, following a period of sustained decline over the summer.

Tim Moore, Senior Economist at IHS Markit and author of the Markit/CIPS Construction PMI, said: “UK construction companies experienced a steady recovery in business activity during November, which continues the rebound from the downturn seen over the third quarter of 2016.

“The brighter picture reflected another solid contribution from residential building and renewed growth in commercial work, which some companies linked to a resumption of projects that had been delayed after the Brexit vote.’’

Many construction businesses are still finding it difficult to source the right skills for their vacancies. This is having a detrimental impact on their projects and some are turning work down because of it.
