Description

The main role of a Bricklayer is the building and repair of walls and other brick structures both internally and externally.

Projects can range from refurbishments to new build.

The main duties of a Bricklayer include:

  • Building or repairing brick walls 
  • Accurate measuring and setting out of area for the first row of bricks
  • Mixing mortar.

 

Hours

The average hours for a Bricklayer can vary depending upon the contract, and can be anything from 39 – 60 per week.

Typical Hourly Rate

Depending on the contract, the average hourly rate for a Bricklayer can range between £11 - £17.

Required Qualifications

All workers are required to hold a CSCS card to gain entry on to sites. Most sites will require you to hold a 'skilled' CSCS card which states you are a Bricklayer, although many sites will allow access to site with the green Site Operative card.

The following qualification will be sufficient to allow you on to site:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying 
  • Level 2 / 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Time served with a minimum of 2 references.

Required Tools

As a self-employed Bricklayer you will be required to provide your own tools.

The main items you will need:

  • A comprehensive set of trowels
  • Hawk board
  • Spirit level
  • Plumb line
  • Lump or club hammer
  • Bolster
  • Cold chisel.

  • Do I need experience?

    Yes. You will need to have had a minimum of 2 years bricklaying experience. You will also be asked for work references.

  • Do I need a CSCS card?

    Yes. It is very unlikely you will be allowed on site without one.

  • Do I have to provide my own tools?

    Yes. You are required to provide all your own tools. Materials will be provided by the hirer.
