Groundworker

Description

A Groundworker prepares the land ready for building. The main duties of a Groundworker are as follows:

  • Drainage (removing sewage or water by flow or pumping)
  • Concreting 
  • Kerbing & Flagging (laying kerbs and flag stones). 

Hours

The average working week for a Groundworker is around 39 hours. 

Typical Hourly Rate

The average hourly rate of pay for a Groundworker is between £10 and £12. 

Required Qualifications

To work as a Groundworker you will need to be either fully qualified or time served.

Qualifications include:

  • NVQs in groundworks 
  • Apprentice trained
  • Time served 
  • City and Guilds qualified.

References must be provided. You will also be required to hold a valid CSCS or CPCS card. Skilled cards are required on most sites, however you may be permitted on site at the Contractor's discretion with a General Operatives green card.

It is also an advantage to hold tickets for various machines such as dumper, roller or telehandler.

Required Tools

The very basic groundworks tools that will be required are:

  • Shovels
  • Lump hammers
  • Basic hand tools.

  • Do I need a CSCS card?

    Yes. To work as a Groundworker you will be required to hold a valid CSCS card

  • Do I have to provide my own tools?

    Yes. As a self-employed Groundworker you are required to provide all your own tools. Materials will be provided by the hirer. 

  • Do I need experience?

    Yes. You will need to be competent and have a high quality of work to be engaged as a Groundworker. You must be able to work equally well alone without guidance, or as part of a team.

    You will also be asked to supply a minimum of two recent construction / groundworks related work references.
