Description

The Foreman is responsible for overseeing construction site activities and ensuring that all areas are delivered to the highest standards possible.

While duties may vary depending on the individual construction project, some of the common responsibilities of a Foreman may be to:

  • Supervise and manage site personnel and sub-contractors
  • Provide reports on site activities and keep the relevant records (e.g. worksheets)
  • Deliver task briefings and toolbox talks
  • Prepare and update risk assessments and method statements
  • Manage the quality of work delivered
  • Promote & maintain the highest standards of Health & Safety

Typical Rate

Pay can vary greatly for Foremen, depending on the contract, experience required and the location of the job. For smaller projects, the salary for a Foreman may be between £20,000 and £35,000, while a Foreman with more experience working on larger, multi-million pound projects may earn between £40,000 - £55,000.

Required Qualifications

As well as having previous experience working in construction, depending on the nature of the contract and the site staff you will be managing, you may also need to hold qualifications for trades such as joinery or bricklaying.

To become a Foreman, you may also be required to have the following qualifications:

  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme)
  • SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) or SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)
  • First Aid At Work
  • Full UK driving licence
