Site Supervisor

Description

Site Supervisors oversee day to day running of a construction project, and often will have responsibility for one particular team within the overall workforce. They support the Site Manager to ensure the project runs efficiently and to budget.

Duties may vary depending on the individual project, but the main responsibilities of a Site Supervisor are to:

  • Assign tasks and oversee day to day operations
  • Liaise and work closely with staff, management and sub-contractors
  • Regularly review and evaluate project status to improve construction performance
  • Produce and submit progress reports
  • Produce and review method statements and risk assessments
  • Monitor stock levels of materials
  • Submit weekly timesheets, materials sheets and plant / site checklists
  • Ensure all project KPIs and KPMs are achieved

Typical Rate

The pay for a Site Supervisor can vary depending on experience and the size and location of the job. The rate for supervisors working on smaller sites can range between £18,000 and £30,000 per year. But Site Supervisors for multi-million pound projects could earn between £40,000 and £60,000.

Required Qualifications

You can take either a mainly academic or work-based route to become a Site Supervisor, so exact requirements can vary. However, some of the most commonly required qualifications are:

  • Construction supervision qualification (such as an NVQ Level 3 or 4)
  • Health and Safety Awareness
  • SSSTS (Site Supervisors Training Scheme)
  • CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme)
  • NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) accreditation to supervisory level, depending on the nature of the project
  • CSCS card - either the Supervisory card (for those who have academic qualifications) or the Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager card (for those with work experience)

You will need to have experience of working in construction if you want to become a Site Supervisor. Many employers require a minimum of 3 years’ experience of working in their specific area of construction.

Supervisory experience may be required, however this is not always essential.
