100,000 construction jobs created by house builders in 2015

The Home Building Federation (HBF) has revealed that more than 100,000 new jobs were created by the house building sector during 2015, taking the number of positions supported by the industry in England to 667,000.

Activity in the house building sector increased sharply last year, despite progress being hampered by the construction skills shortage, and the HBF’s research found that had resulted in a strong trend for job creation.

Its Building Communities, Boosting Employment report concluded that in addition to engineers and traditional site trades such as bricklayers and electricians, the sector provided a growing number of opportunities for people in support roles, including accountants, buyers and sales staff.

The report also highlighted that many regions of England had benefited from the strength of the sector, revealing that:

• Outside London, Greater Manchester saw the biggest increase in house building employment with an additional 5,418 people recruited last year
• House building in London now employs over 100,000 people
• Outside the capital, house building activity in the West Midlands supports most employment with 27,907 jobs
• North Yorkshire experienced the biggest proportional growth with employment numbers doubling

The industry is recruiting and training tens of thousands of new people to ensure it can continue to deliver significant sustainable increases in supply and provide the high quality homes the country needs.”
