Competitive construction market highlights the importance of efficient recruitment

Published on 25th April 2019

The importance of having effective recruitment plans and processes in place was again highlighted by the IHS Markit / CIPS Construction PMI report for March 2019, which showed that employment in the sector continued to grow despite a decline in output.

Skills shortages have made finding the right workers for construction and civil engineering projects increasingly difficult over the last few years, and it appears that employers are continuing to hire experienced workers in order to ensure that they can deliver future contracted work.

With competition for skilled workers still strong, it remains essential that you have a process in place for attracting the tradespeople and construction professionals required to fulfil your order pipeline.

The ongoing trend for job creation in the construction industry comes even though activity levels in the sector appear to be slowing, with the PMI showing a decline for the second consecutive month.

According to the report, both new business and employment figures increased last month, if only slightly. And with the rise in new orders also came increased optimism, with business owners reporting higher levels of confidence for the months ahead than they had during February.

Residential construction was the best performing business area in March with activity rising at its fastest pace in three months, bringing housing to its strongest so far in 2019. However, commercial work remained the weakest area, contributing to the first back-to-back fall in overall output since August 2016 - although it is important to note that this remained only marginal.

Despite a slight increase in new orders, survey respondents still reported intense competition for new work. To ensure you can successfully deliver your projects in such a competitive market, it is crucial that you have the right workforce in place in preparation for new contract wins.
