Construction job creation remains high as business optimism improves

Published on 7th January 2019

Construction job creation remained high in December, despite a slowdown in business activity towards the end of the year, according to a recent industry report.

Growth in overall construction activity eased to a three-month low last month, with the sector seeing a reduction in demand for house building and commercial projects - the latter experiencing its slowest rate of expansion since last May.

Civil engineering, however, maintained its recent rebound and was the leading category with activity rising at its fastest pace since May 2017.

Levels of new orders also increased for the seventh consecutive month in December, although this was at a subdued rate.

But despite the slowdown in growth, many construction firms reported improved confidence for the year ahead. Upturns in investment in transport and infrastructure projects has fueled an increase in business optimism, with many construction firms looking forward to potential growth boosts from this work throughout 2019.

This hope for the coming months can also be cited as a factor in the continued increase in employment across the sector. Employers have shown no sign of stopping as job creation continued to increase at a solid rate towards the end of the year.

And on top of direct employment figures growing, subcontractor usage also picked up in December, seeing the strongest rate of expansion since December 2015.
