Demand for construction workers remains high as sector enjoys increased activity

Published on 15th November 2018

The recruitment team at Kalcrest noticed a sustained increase in the number of construction job vacancies last month, and looking at a recent industry report, we don’t seem to have been alone in identifying the trend.

According to the latest UK Construction PMI, the overall rate of expansion improved at a solid rate last month, with October being the second strongest performing in 16 months. This increased business activity was driven predominantly by the commencement of new projects and an upturn in work overseas.

However, the recent growth was most reflected in civil engineering, which saw its fastest growth since July 2017 and was the best performing segment for the first time since January. Residential and commercial work also increased at solid rates, although at a slower pace than seen in August and September.

But despite the easing growth rate, construction companies across the UK have continued to further expand their workforces, leading to “one of the highest levels of hiring in the last three years”, according to Duncan Brock, Group Director at the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply.

Also speaking on the increase in job creation in light of the recent slowdown of activity growth, Trevor Balchin, Economics Director at IHS Markit said: “Construction firms continued to raise headcounts at a strong pace, suggesting they are not expecting an imminent contraction in demand.”
