Demand For Temporary Construction And Engineering Staff Rising

Published on 11th June 2014

Demand for temporary labouring and engineering staff is rising as the economy continues to recover, a new study has found.

The latest KPMG/REC Report on Jobs showed that recruitment agencies in the UK saw the value and volume of temporary and contract workers out on assignment increase in May.

The Midlands saw the fastest rate of growth in demand for staff to fill short-term jobs, but there was also growth in the North of England and the rest of the country.

Researchers found that site labourers and other blue collar workers were the most in-demand staff for temporary jobs, with engineers in second place.

While the number of temporary jobs available in the North of England increased, the study showed that the supply of workers fell; a trend that helped to push up hourly rates for some positions.

News of the growing demand for staff came after a separate study revealed that activity levels in the construction sector are continuing to increase.

The Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index for May was 60 (any figure above 50 represents growth), with house building the strongest area of activity.

The study also found that there was a rise in staffing levels in the construction sector for the 12th consecutive month.

Tim Moore, Senior Economist at Markit said: “The latest survey highlights that the construction sector is now experiencing its longest period of job creation for six years.

“Strengthening demand for construction staff arrived amidst the fastest drop in sub-contractor availability since August 1997, which in turn contributed to a survey-record rise in sub-contractor charges in May.”
